Water Harvesting 101 Podcast: Episode 10 – Earthworks Creation Tip #2 – Best Practices for Basins

Digging a basin? Before you pick up a shovel, let’s pause for an important safety briefing.

Please call 811 or use the Call811.com website to get your underground utilities located. You don’t want to discover these utilities by accident, especially gas lines. That could be an explosive experience.

That ends our safety briefing. Returning you to your regularly scheduled blog post…

When you’re digging a rainwater harvesting basin, you may be wondering about where you’re going to put all of the dirt. I suggesting using it to build a berm on the downhill side of your basin.

This will keep the water on your property and out of the street, where it becomes runoff that can contribute to urban flooding.

You can also make your berm part of your desert garden, as I’m doing with the front yard berm shown above. From left to right, there’s a Baja fairy duster shrub, golden barrel cactii, an ocotillo, and more golden barrels.
