Water Harvesting 101 Podcast: Episode 26 – Photo Op

Rain! In the garden! It’s time for a photo op!

Now, do I take my cameras out in the rain? Sure, why not? My Nikons have excellent weather sealing, and, yes, I have tested it during heavy downpours.

Then there are those nighttime rainstorms. Too dark for photography. Best to wait until the morning after for those raindrops that are still glistening on the plants.

That’s what I was hoping for after a late August storm. But, alas, those glistening raindrops had already evaporated.

What to do? Well, I like to play a game called “Find Something.” As in, look for something in the garden and photograph it.

On the morning after this storm, I spotted new growth on my fig tree. Perfect opportunity for my closeup rig, the Nikon D850 with the 105mm lens. It’s what I use for macro shots like the one shown above.

Here’s the good news: If you’re shooting nature macros, you don’t need the latest, greatest, and up-to-datest gear. After all, the D850 was launched nearly 10 years ago, and it’s still my go-to in the yard. It’s also what I used for most of my City Nature book photo.

And, if only camera you have with you is in your phone, use it! I’ve shot many a plant photo with my phone.

When’s the best time to shoot those plants? Well, set your alarm because you’ll be getting up early. As in, right after sunrise when the light is still soft and the winds are still.
