Water Harvesting 101 Podcast: Episode 29 – End of the Monsoon Season

Sorry to say, but Tucson’s 2025 monsoon season was a bust. Started with high hopes, then it fizzled out.

However, a series of Pacific storms is reducing some of our summer rain deficit. The most recent of these was a combination of two tropical storms, Priscilla and Raymond.

In three days, this soggy couple dropped 1.85″ of rain into my rain gauge. Even better, the rainfall filled my 1,500 gallon cistern to overflowing.

Now, how did I adapt to less summer rain than expected? Well, I cut way back on gardening in my two raised beds.

But my vertical planter? The Greenstalk? It really came into its own as a producer. The above photos shows just some of the malabar spinach growing in it.

How do I water it? By taking a shower!

I have one of those old timey tub shower combinations with a tub spout. Before I turn on the water, I put a bucket below the spout.

Then I mix the water to exactly the right temperature, pull the bucket out, and take my shower.

After I’m refreshed and dressed, I take the bucket out to the Greenstalk and give the plants a good drink.
