There are few photographic topics I enjoy more than rain in the Tucson desert.
Know what I’m really enjoying about this photo? The rain that’s been collected in my gauge!
In this post, I’m offering tips on how to clean a rain gauge so you can keep enjoying scenes like this.
I like to keep this process as simple as possible. I fill the rain gauge with tap water, add a few drops of Oasis, a water harvesting-friendly soap, and then I let the whole assembly sit for a day or so.
This should loosen up most of that accumulated crud that sticks to the inside of your gauge. If it doesn’t, try a soft cloth.
I don’t recommend using a brush to scrub the crud out. That’s a good way to scratch the inside of the gauge, which makes it harder to see how much rain you’re getting.
Once the gauge is cleaned to your satisfaction, pour that soapy water on a plant that could use a drink. Then give your gauge a rinse and offer that water to another thirsty plant.
Happy rainfall monitoring with your clean gauge!
