Since the summer heat is on blast and the monsoon rains have been paltry, it’s time to cut back on water use. Here’s how I’m doing it.
First thing is cutting back on my own consumption. That means shorter showers, and I have a timer that makes them easy and fun. It’s a five-minute hourglass, and I got it for free from Tucson Water.
I’m also using a low-flow shower head that I really like. It simply doesn’t feel like one of those shower heads that chokes the flow down to a trickle. Welcome to the world of High Sierra Showerheads, made in the USA.
Okay, that’s enough time in the shower. Let’s move on to the second thing, cutting back on the water that comes from other sources. Since we just haven’t been getting rain, I made the decision to let my raised beds lay fallow until fall. The big bed is pictured above.
I use my cistern water for these beds, but that Great Watering Can in the Sky isn’t dropping water on my roof. Hence, no water flowing into the cistern.
So, as a water harvesting friend told me, that cistern water is like money in the bank. And I’m rationing that water very carefully.
